The annual growth in electric vehicles – including freight transport – also requires an increase in the number of charging infrastructure points for e-mobility.
As of the end of February 2025, there were 208,644 purely electric cars in Austria. This represents approximately 4 % of the total E-Cars in Austria.
The goal is to have a 30% share of purely electric vehicles in Austria by the end of 2030, meaning there should be approximately 6-times as many purely electric vehicles on the roads in the future.
This represents the market potential for electric vehicles and also the challenges for the development of the e-charging station infrastructure in the coming years. In addition, trucks and buses are also increasingly running on electric power.
CHARGER - INFRASTRUCTURE
In recent years, the number of charging points has more than doubled. By the end of 2024, there will be around 25,000 charging points in Austria, most of them standard charging points (up to 22kw- see chart below).
What must be established and essentially increased in future, are public "fast or power" charging options (from 150kw-400kw and more - for trucks/busses), both in urban areas and in the "regions," i.e., in rural areas, and, of course, along all major traffic routes and parking facilities.
