For several centuries, we have been setting up defenses and dams (barriers) on our brooks and rivers, which create difficulties for fish reproduction to migrate. A dramatic reduction in fish populations is a result of this development.

The rehabilitation of this development has now been regulated by the EU by law:

Through the EU Water Framework Directive 2000/60/EC of the European Parliament and by the Council of 23 October 2000 for the realization of an orderly framework of community measures in the area of water policy appeared a tool and guide for reproduction of an ecologically intact status of our flowing water.

Based on his regulation and the need of fish-migration solutions, SET developed within the last three years their own innovative solution.

Estimated Costs in AUSTRIA (Rechnungshof 2012):

The BMLFUW (Environmental Ministry) estimated the costs for the implementation of all measures related to the Water Framework Directive in the entire Federal territory to 2027 to approx. EUR 3 billion. Of the surveyed countries, only in Lower Austria did an estimate of the total cost of all measures (about EUR 830 million to EUR 930 million). The existing estimates were very crude, not coordinated between the federal government and the regional countries and based on uncertain basics. The current data and estimates do not allow for a precise forecast of the financial needs. In view of the high demand for funds, detailed cost estimates are essential to ensure financing.

The Environmental Promotion Act provides for measures to improve the ecological status of the water bodies in the years 2007 to 2015 up to a maximum present value of EUR 140 million for the entire period. In Lower Austria, there were promotion guidelines for both competitors (companies) and municipal promotion agencies.
